1/23/08 01:15 pm - A New UH

Ever since I arrived on campus as a freshman in 1980, UH has seemed to be unsure of itself and its worth. Back in those days, many people referred to it as "cougar high" because it was not well-regarded in the community as a school. In truth, back in the day, UH was more teenager to more established Texas schools and we often were sort of loud and brash. It's funny to me to realize that our 80 year old school was barely 50 back then and that I've been a part of UH for more than a third of its existence.

That isn't why I'm writing today though.

Today, UH finds itself in a better position than it ever has been in my affiliation with it. The school has matured and much good work has gone on. And I genuinely believe we are on the cusp of something fantastic.

We have a new Chancellor and President that arrived this month. She brings experience and knowledge of how to take a community's commuter school and turn it into a first-rate, first-choice school. And I am very excited about this. We have a board genuinely committed to change. Our leadership within the school is as focused on teamwork and service as I have ever seen.

We're about to undergo a lot of change. Some of it will be hard. Some may be tempted to argue that we have our own ways of doing things or question the directions our leadership is now going to take us. But they have been brought in precisely because they will make changes and we need to give them all the opportunity in the world to help us all go from very good to great.

Trust is a necessary component of greatness.
